What is “Cellular IoT” and how does it fit into the services provided by WBG ?

Cellular IoT (Internet of Things) connects physical devices to the internet using the same mobile networks as smartphones (e.g., 4G, 5G), providing connectivity without requiring local Wi-Fi or wired infrastructure. This allows for real-time monitoring and management of devices across broad and even remote locations.

How is cellular IoT used in the field ?

  • Asset Monitoring: Shipping containers use cellular IoT to report their condition (temperature, humidity, or vibration) during transit, ensuring the integrity of sensitive cargo like pharmaceuticals or food.
  • Fleet Tracking: Vehicles are equipped with cellular-connected sensors that transmit real-time data on location (GPS), fuel consumption, engine health, and driver behavior.
  • Smart Utilities: Smart meters for water, gas, or electricity utilize low-power cellular technologies to transmit usage data over long periods without needing frequent battery replacements.
  • Vending Machines: Connecting vending machines over an IoT cellular network supports contactless credit/debit cards and mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay.  By providing connectivity, vending machines can also report inventory levels, temperature alerts, and other technical.

How does WBG fit in ?

Like smartphones, IoT devices are activated on cellular networks and like smartphones the service charges can vary greatly, depending on the use and immediate need.  Monthly costs can range greatly depending on applications and usage and they, like any other type of data devices, can be subject to significant swings in data consumption.

At WBG, we have saved customers 10 – 50% annually and thousands of dollars on their IoT services by a) initially meeting with the customer to better understand the application b) negotiating rates with the carriers and c) properly managing the data usage through monthly reviews and real time audits to limit costs.

If you have a Cellular IoT application you’re interested in deploying or if you’ve already implemented a solution and would like advice on best practices related to rate plans, cost controls, please contact us.  With over 100 years of collective wireless experience, we can help.
